2017. Scanned pencil and ink drawing, vectorized in Adobe Illustrator.
Delicious fermented foods under the Slow Brine banner are now available at two farmer's markets in San Mateo County, with more potential locations in the works. As Slow Brine prepared to launch their retail operation and website, they needed an image of a sailing vessel, preferably as scalable vector graphics, to adorn the website. I learned that this idea originated with accounts from Captain Cook's journeys on the HMS Endeavour, who used fermented vegetables to keep his crew from getting scurvy. I found a cool old painting of the Endeavour by Gregory Robinson online as reference for my pencil sketch, which I then improved with ink. The wave forms are highly stylized to add some dynamism.
Below are images of the artwork integrated into the Slow Brine site by the Slow Brine team, and the original inked drawing of the ship, prior to vectorization in Illustrator. I also drew the chain that leads down to the Slow Brine logo; this was worked up in a separate drawing and then added to the ship in Illustrator.
