The editors at Astra Publishing House were looking for a minimalist and laconic map with a military aesthetic to accompany Markiyan Kamysh's account of his travels in The Zone, or what remained of Chornobyl, Ukraine in the early twenty-first century. I lean into the haunted, reverberating memory of the mid-eighties meltdown by running a landcover depiction through a halftone effect, adding a static noise to the piece as pervasive as the radiation in the ruined buildings and polluted waters. The Eurostile typeface completes the Cold War sci-fi feel, a touch of surreality for a riveting work of non-fiction.
